24 Nov 2008: Virgin - arghhh!
Oh the joys! Today we undertook the installation of our Virgin phone / broadband cable from the house to the roadside connection point. The ductwork has been in for months and, needless to say, it's managed to kink and collapse as the clay has settled post excavation. The draw rope pulls fine, but not so the cable! So, halfway down the drive it snapped. We dug to expose the services trench but were faced with the prospect of enlarging the hole significantly in order to remove the pipe bedding gravel to find the duct we wanted. Then inspiration struck. Why not just suck it out with our rather impressive site Makita vacuum cleaner – sounded like a daft idea at one level, but worth a try if it reduced the infernal digging through clay, flint and hardcore. It worked like a dream – gravel removed with minimum disruption to the remainder and no more dig required. It has been such a useful thing to have all through the build!
