16 Jun 2008: Floor levelling

This weekend we have put a Weber floor levelling compound in Bedroom 1 and the study. This is a product that is quite often used in commercial applications, especially where vinyl is going to be applied and it is critical that an absolutely perfect finish is achieved. Any high points in the floor will show signs of wear first.  We are having carpet in the bedroom and the study and although the concrete finish is quite good, the levelling compound will give the perfect finish we want.

Nothing sticks to dust! In the world of construction, everything is coated in dust! So - scrape, sweep, hoover then we started with a primer which seals the concrete floor and eliminates all the dust. This is applied with a roller – is doesn’t smell too good! Although it isn’t crucial, it is worth applying as it ensures good adhesion and makes the levelling compound much easier to apply, as it controls the porosity of the concrete, so the compound dries at a constant rate and with less air bubbles coming through. It takes a couple of hours to dry and then the next stage is preparing the compound. You need to add a specific amount of water to ensure the right consistency and you need to mix it until it is smooth. You pour it on and trowel it until it is level. I thought the compound was going to be a ‘pour it on and watch it "self-level" exercise but as usual, nothing is ever that simple! It is now dry and the finish is superb. Now we have to put the skirting boards on, paint everything and we will be ready for the carpets.

Our friend and underfloor heating designer, Ian Shaw, visited the site this weekend and after two months of not seeing the build, appeared to be suitably impressed with the progress.  "It is like living with a child" he said,  "you don't notice changes yourselves but actually, over the last couple of months, things have moved on quite considerably"
