We have struggled to get our heads around the whole issue of home automation. It is critical to the way this building has been designed and crucial to the whole living experience of Jean and Bill. We want them to be able to exist simply and we want Bill to be able to manage to do things that he can't in his current home - like open the curtains, put on a DVD, raise the shutters, turn all the lights off at once when the go to bed. There are a lot of providers 'out there' but we needed sort this out without a huge outlay of money. Today we had a meeting with Rob Walker, the UK representative of Spega - a German company http://www.spega.de/en/index.html . It went really well and it seems that he understands exactly what our requirements are and is going to work with us to reach that end. Spega provide the hardware, the boxes that talk to each other. I'm not an expert but my knowledge is increasing rapidly and I would highly recommend Spega to anyone.
